The most effective home security is layered. A visible deterrent, a way to detect someone getting in, and a way to see what is happening. For most homes that means an alarm and CCTV working together, not one or the other. An alarm reacts to a break-in, CCTV shows you what is going on, and both make your home a less appealing target in the first place. Here is how to think about it.
Start with deterrence
Most break-ins are opportunist, so the first job is to make your home look like more trouble than it is worth. A visible alarm box, cameras that are clearly there, and good lighting around the entrances do a lot of the work before anything is ever triggered. The evidence backs this up: homes with visible security are far less likely to be targeted than those without. Deterrence is the cheapest security you will ever buy.
Alarms: what they actually do
An intruder alarm detects entry and raises the alarm, either just locally with a siren, or as a monitored system that alerts a response centre. The main choices are:
- Monitored or unmonitored. A monitored system means someone is notified when it goes off, even when you are away. Unmonitored just sounds the siren.
- Wired or wireless. Wireless is quicker to fit and tidier in a finished home. Wired suits new builds and renovations where the cabling can go in before the walls are closed up.
Modern systems are app-controlled, so you can arm and disarm from your phone and get alerts wherever you are.
CCTV: coverage that is actually useful
The point of CCTV is not to have cameras, it is to have useful footage. That means positioning them for genuine coverage of the entrances and approaches, rather than dotting them about. Good systems give you clear images day and night, remote viewing on your phone, and enough recording storage to go back and check.
One thing people forget: where the cameras point matters legally as well as practically. If your cameras capture areas beyond your own property, like a neighbour’s garden or the pavement, data protection rules come into play, and the ICO has guidance on doing it properly. A good installer will position things to avoid that headache.
Access control and entry
For larger homes, or anywhere with more than one entrance to manage, access control and video entry add a layer. Video door entry lets you see and speak to whoever is at the door before opening it. Access control, using fobs or keypads, lets you manage who gets in across one door or several. It is more common on commercial premises, but it has its place at home too.
Putting it together
The real value is in the parts working as one system rather than a box of gadgets. Planned properly, the alarm, cameras and entry all tie together, the cabling is concealed, and the kit is discreet enough that it protects the place without taking it over. That planning, the survey and the tidy integration, is what separates a proper installation from a DIY job that looks it.
